Giants Sign Cornerback Greg Newsome II to One-Year Contract

The New York Giants have reached an agreement to sign cornerback Greg Newsome II. According to Jordan Schultz, the former first-round pick is joining the team on a one-year contract.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the deal holds a potential value of up to $10 million. This short-term arrangement allows Newsome to reset his market value before the 2027 season.

Newsome, 25, spent the latter half of last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Cleveland Browns traded him midseason, though he struggled to find consistent form following the transition to a new system.

Before entering the professional ranks, Newsome was a standout three-year starter at Northwestern. His performance earned him a first-team All-Big Ten selection during his junior year before declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Cleveland Browns originally selected Newsome with the No. 26 overall pick. He initially played under a four-year rookie contract valued at $12,748,736, which included a signing bonus of over $6.6 million.

Cleveland later exercised Newsome's fifth-year option for the 2025 season, which was worth $13.377 million fully guaranteed. However, his tenure with the Browns ended during a significant trade with Jacksonville.

Trade History and Recent Statistics

The Browns sent Newsome and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Jaguars. In exchange, Cleveland acquired cornerback Tyson Campbell along with a seventh-round selection for the 2026 draft cycle.

During the 2025 campaign, Newsome participated in five games for Cleveland and 12 games for Jacksonville. He recorded 52 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and one interception across both teams.

His defensive contributions last season also included nine pass deflections. Newsome now heads to New York seeking to stabilize his career and secure a long-term position in the league's secondary rotations.
